Crunch time
Over the past five years I’d put on weight and managed to get myself a beer belly that rivalled Santa Claus! My general level of fitness was also at an all time low. I'd gone from being someone who ran half marathons to being unable to walk up stairs without being out of breath. After a number of comments from old friends I decided I needed to do something about it. I had to lose weight.

Choosing Weight Watchers Online
Recommendations from a number of friends and family pointed me towards Weight Watchers. I travel regularly with work though so could not have committed to a meeting. I logged onto the website on New Year’s Day to look at the options. When I discovered there was an online programme with all the resources such as recipes and branded foods listed - I subscribed there and then to Weight Watchers Online.

My top food swaps
I found making simple changes to my eating habits had a big impact on my weight loss.
  • Drank alcohol less often and in smaller quantities and drank gin and slimline tonic rather than my usual beer.
  • Switched to skimmed milk from semi skimmed, to the lighter versions of cooking sauces and to diet coke rather than regular.
  • Swapped regular cooking sources for low fat equivalents.
  • Breakfast became an essential part of my day.
  • Reduced the amount of butter and mayonnaise I ate at lunchtime.
  • My weekly pizza nights and daily chocolate biscuits have also become a little less frequent!

Online tools
I’m quite a fussy eater and enjoy simple food. When making dishes like Spaghetti Bolognaise I cut down on the amount of meat and bulked it out with plenty of vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms. I logged the recipe in the online Recipe Builder tool and have built up quite a Recipe File.

I reassessed my portion sizes and realised I didn’t have to eat the huge platefuls I had been to feel full up and satisfied. This was a big learning curve.

I’d have been useless without the online Calculator and Tracker – I logged my food after every meal and sometimes even before!

Finding my feet again!
I liked to run when I was younger – before uni and beer got in the way, but wasn’t sure how to get back into it. As an incentive, I enrolled in an 10K run. This kept me focused. I found setting myself mini challenges – achieving them – and then rewarding myself – was a great way to stay focused on losing weight. I achieved my personal best time in the race, and a month later reached my Goal Weight.

Finding success
I discovered that I could lose weight and it wasn’t that difficult provided I stuck to the plan and found a bit of willpower!

My relationship with food has changed – for the better! I understand about eating in moderation and pay more attention to what I’m eating. I used to get heartburn after I ate, which is a thing of the past, plus I’ve had less colds and sleep much better.

It took Glenn 5 months to reach his Goal Weight.
